Class Overview
This class is designed to be an introduction to cooking and sewing. We focus on hands on learning, spending 1 class a week on instruction, and the other class periods are spent in the labs cooking or working on our sewing projects. The goal of this class is to teach basics so that students can feel confident and comfortable enough to continue learning these skills on their own.
Topics to be covered:
- Basic sewing. Threading needles, tying knots, running stitch, whipstitch, blanket stitch.
- Machine sewing. Parts of the machine, sewing safety, working with pins, sewing straight seams.
- Food safety. How to prevent foodborne illness. How to properly clean, chill, cook and separate while preparing food.
- Kitchen safety. How to use kitchen appliances and supplies as they are intended to prevent injury. How to clean a kitchen.
- Measurements and equivalents; learn the common measurement amounts, and how to reduce or enlarge recipe amounts.
- Basic Nutrition. Myplate information, what a well balanced diet includes, how to make healthy food choices.
- Basic cooking skills and understanding recipes.
