This course will focus on critical thinking skills and developing new ideas, concepts, and connections from texts. We will study critical theories and apply these to the works we read. Works include both fiction and nonfiction texts, and heavy emphasis will be placed on developing writing skills.
Developing an arguable thesis statement and supporting it
Student-led discussions on dealing with conflict and relationships
Comparing and contrasting texts with similar themes but with different purposes
Understanding an author’s writing style
Participating in class discussions using language which promotes critical thinking
Studying the importance of being literate in the modern world
