Class: Critical Reading and Writing

Overview:

We will be working on critical thinking skills and developing NEW ideas, concepts and connections from the text. The students will be leading many of the class discussions. We will be studying critical theories and applying these to the works that we read. We will read various authentic texts and non-fiction. Language and strong thesis statements will be developed for more effective writing skills.

Topics to be covered:

  • The Odyssey (novel)
    • – Project – food, art and imovie.
    • – Writing- developing powerful language and a strong, arguable thesis statement with a clear and focused essay.
  • Ethan Frome (novel)
    • – discussions led by students dealing with marraige, conflict and how to develop healthy relationships in dating.

  • Ray Bradburry Unit- short stories and Fahrenheit 451 (novel)
    • – Understanding the author and his writing style.
    • – Engaging in socratic seminar led by students.

  • Of Mice and Men (novel read on the Kindle)
    • – Students will read this work together in class on Kindles- notetaking on the ipad.

    • – We will look at this work through various critical theories (lenses)
